Not "Crazy" To Stay In Long Beach To See Quality Musical Theater
Some people would have us believe that good theater can only be found outside our city limits. O contraire. We are blessed with seven local companies - as theatrically diverse as they come - that offer us lively entertainment week in and week out.

Gershwin brothers live on in 'Crazy for You'
On Broadway, death is no excuse.
The Gershwin brothers may have died in, respectively, 1937 (George) and 1983 (Ira), but that didn't stop them from getting their names on the 1992 Tony-award winning musical, "Crazy For You."

Friday, July 18, 2003 'Crazy' in love with the 1930s

A lavish Long Beach staging of the retro-musical has the era's laughs, glamour and heart.

In most of the musical comedies from the 1930s, it was boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. In "Crazy for You," a retro-'30s musical created a few years ago, the boy never has the girl in the first place. In fact, in the story line concocted by Ken Ludwig, the relationship between the boy and girl has more sophisticated shadings than anything seen during the Depression era.

CRAZY FOR YOU
PRESS ROOM

This 1992 Tony Award winner for Best Musical is a classic song-and-dance show with exhilarating tap dancing reminiscent of "42nd Street" and "Singin' in the Rain". It's a stylish, sassy, hilarious romantic comedy featuring a fantastic George and Ira Gershwin score, including "Someone to Watch Over Me," "I Got Rhythm," "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Embraceable You." Who could ask for anything more?

DAVID ENGEL
(Bobby Child)

is reprising the role that earned him the 2002 Ovation Award as "Best Actor in a Musical". MTW audiences will remember him on this stage in SWING!, and as the Gene Kelly role in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN opposite Tami Tappan Damiano. Mr. Engel appeared on Broadway opposite Carol Burnett in PUTTING IT TOGETHER, as the Bass Wickersham in SEUSSICAL: THE MUSICAL and as the original Hanna from Hamburg in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. David is best known as Smudge in FOREVER PLAID, the role he created in the original New York, London-West End and Los Angeles productions (LA Drama Critics, Drama-Logue, Ovation Awards). He recreated his role this past holiday season in PLAID TIDINGS at the Pasadena Playhouse. Other stage credits include starring roles in KISS ME, KATE, FALSETTOS, PASSION, DAMES AT SEA, I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE, I DO! I DO!, and as an Aggie in both the stage and the film version of THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS. David would like to extend a special note of thanks to his manager Carole Schorr and his dresser Inez Meehan for taking such loving care of him. You too Mom!

TAMI TAPPAN DAMIANO (Polly Baker)

comes directly from the critically praised Rubicon Theatre's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE in which she played Stella. Originally from Washington, D.C., she received the Helen Hayes Award for Supporting Actress in LYDIE BREEZE by John Guare. She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon and was seen on Broadway and in Los Angeles as Ellen in MISS SAIGON. Favorite roles include Princess Leonide in TRIUMPH OF LOVE (Santa Barbara CLO, 2001 Robby Award), Kathy in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (MTW, Welk Resort Theatre), Woman 1 in I LOVE YOU, YOU'RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE (MTW) and Shirley in LADY BE GOOD (La Fenice Opera, Venice, Italy). Tami is currently working on her solo CD for LML Music and is performing in concerts all around the country. Television appearances include "Third Rock from the Sun", "The Good Doctor: The Paul Fleiss Story", and "Sunset Beach". Tami will be heard as the singing voice of Ting Ting in Disney's "Mulan II", to be released on video in 2004. Always a thrill to be performing with David Engel!.
