Each year, the Musical Theatre West Footlighters sponsor a scholarship program in which five high school students are given $1,000 each to help further their studies in the arts.
Applications are received from high school students from all across Southern California. Auditions are held in the spring, judged by a panel of industry professionals. Students are only eligible to apply if they are nominated by their performing arts teacher.
The five winners are asked to perform at a Footlighters luncheon where they perform two songs and receive their award.
Throughout the year we have different productions being put on for our community. You can find more information about a few of our shows below!
Additionally, students who are competing for the MTW Footlighers Scholarships that have been a lead in their high school musical in the current award year are eligible to be chosen for entry into the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the “Jimmys”) to compete for additional cash prizes and scholarship opportunities.
We’re pleased to announce that one of 2012’s scholarship winners, Sarah Lynn Marion, won the 2013 Jimmy Award for Best Actress! In fact, three of the last four Jimmy Award winners have been MTW Footlighters scholarship winners.
In addition to the Footlighters Scholarships there are several scholarships that private families have funded in memory and in honor of loved ones, including the Ken & Dottie Reiner Scholarship, the John Bisom Memorial Scholarship, the Jan Ritschel Memorial Scholarship, the Garman Family Scholarship, the Temple Family Scholarship and an anonymously funded scholarship, bringing the total of number of yearly scholarships distributed by Musical Theatre West up to 11!
