CONTRACT

AEA rate: $1,004/wk (COST Tier 2+)
Non-AEA rate: $16.50/hr for all rehearsal and performance hours worked.

Priority is always given to those with local housing. Non-AEA members are always encouraged to attend all auditions.

HEALTH & SAFETY

MTW operates under an Infection Control Policy which has been filed with AEA. All company members must be Fully Vaccinated for COVID-19, or have a Bona Fide Health or Religious exemption. Anyone with symptoms of COVID, flu, or any other infectious disease that can be transmitted by casual contact should not attend auditions.

Everyone participating in the auditions is encouraged to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94).

We encourage members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Jersey Boys

**The role of BOB GAUDIO has been cast.  Seeking potential understudies/swings.

Frankie Valli: a strong tenor with sweet and strong falsetto and be able to sing in the style of Frankie Valli; strong tenor to high A or Bb plus strong falsetto up to treble G; charismatic and charming; must be a very strong actor (comfortable with narrative text) and have a gritty side as well as a polished veneer; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies.

Nick Massi: a strong bass/baritone voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; a quiet dreamer who longs for life after The Four Seasons.

Bob Gaudio: a strong tenor/baritenor voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; an intelligent, sensitive, and introspective musical prodigy.

Tommy DeVito: a strong tenor/baritenor voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; ability to play guitar a very strong plus; a natural born leader with an appealing, bad-boy quality.

Joe Pesci: young, energetic; must be a good actor and a strong singer.

Bob Crewe: intelligent and flamboyant; genius music producer and lyricist; an integral part of creating the magic of The Four Seasons.

Gyp DeCarlo: tough, mafioso type; must be a good actor and strong singer.

Mary Delgado: a strong singer, actor, and dancer; Frankie’s wife; tough, “seen it all,” Italian, Jersey girl; she’s got a killer sense of humor; actor also plays a variety of other roles, including member of a 60s style girl group; strong belt useful; high straight tone soprano also useful but not required.

Lorraine and Francie: versatile actress, singer, and dancer with flexible vocal registers to play a variety of roles (the many girlfriends of The Four Seasons, etc); should fit well together a la 60s band Shangri-las and be believable as “tough-as-nails” Jersey girls; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must have strong belt.

**The role of CINDERELLA’S MOTHER has been cast. Seeking potential understudies/swings.

Narrator/Mysterious Man: Male, age 40s to 60s. Vocal Range: G2 – E4. Mysterious character with secret. Mostly acting role with physical movement.

Cinderella: Female, age 20 to 30. Vocal Range: G3 – G5. A young, earnest maiden who is constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters.

Jack: Male, age 20 to 30. Vocal Range: B2 – G4. The feckless giant killer who is ‘almost a man.’ He is adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed.

Jack’s Mother: Female, age 50 to 65. Vocal Range: Bb3 – Gb5. Browbeating and weary, Jack’s protective mother who is independent, bold, and strong-willed.

The Baker: Male, age 35 to 45. Vocal Range: Ab2 – G4. A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles.

The Baker’s Wife: Female, age: 35 to 45. Vocal Range: F3 – G5. Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors.

Cinderella’s Stepmother: Female, age 40 to 50. Vocal Range: A3 – F#5. The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella.

Florinda And Lucinda: Female, 25 to 35. Vocal Range: C4 – Ab5. Cinderella’s stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother’s footsteps of abusing Cinderella.

Little Red Riding Hood: Female, age 18 to 20. Vocal Range: Bb3 – F5. A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, yet youthful and naive.

The Witch: Female, age 45 to 55. Vocal Range: F3 – G5. Sarcastic, ugly-then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel who is straightforward and aggressive.

Cinderella’s Mother: Female, age 40 to 55. Vocal Range: E4 – F4. Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree.

Wolf/Cinderella’s Prince: Male, age 30 to 35. Vocal Range: Bb2 – Gb4. 

• Wolf: Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey. 
• Cinderella’s Prince: Vain and gorgeous, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing.

Rapunzel: Female, age 20 to 30. Vocal Range: B3 – A5. A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world.

Rapunzel’s Prince: Male, age 30 to 40. Vocal Range: C#3 – E4. Just as vain and gorgeous as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exciting endeavor.

The Steward: Male, age 30 to 50. Vocal Range: Ensemble singer. A man-servant who is used to doing whatever he has to solve a problem. His only care is to please his master or the strongest personality in the room. Conniving, callous and cowardly.

Cinderella’s Father: Male, age 50+. Vocal Range: Ensemble singer. Out of touch with his family but harmless and well-meaning. No solo singing.

MTW’s Fall 2024 Educational Tour 

Non-Union Contract

Shows: ‘Ronna Llama’s Moving Day’ & ‘Ready Player Three’

Thank you to all who auditioned! Our Education department will reach out about casting in the coming weeks.

Production Notes:

Anticipated rehearsal schedule: October 28-November 8 (Monday-Friday, 4-10pm)
Tour performance schedule: November 12-15 & 18-22 (7am-4pm)

These two 30-minute shows will be rehearsed and performed in rep (those who are cast will be performing in both). Actors cast as Alex will also perform as Ronna Llama, Harper as Mama Llama, Lance as Nico Llama, and Man 1 as Hoppy Kangaroo. 

All Actors are signed as Assistant Stage Managers (ASMs) and will be required, as such, to lift scenery and sound equipment during daily load-in and load outs. All Actors participate in assembling and disassembling the set at each venue and school at which they perform.

Non-Union contract information: $18.00/hour for rehearsal, $120 per performance day not to exceed $600/week for performances.

There is no gas stipend. Must be a local hire.

If you choose to continue on the Spring ‘25 Educational Tours, cast members will receive a pay raise each leg returned for.

Ronna Llama’s Moving Day

Synopsis:

Ronna Llama is content on her llama farm, living with her Mama Llama, and brother, Nico Llama. Ronna’s life is wonderful until Hoppy Kangaroo delivers a letter from her Papa Llama. He writes that they must move to another farm down the road, and Ronna confides that she’s scared of change and anything that’s new. She seeks the advice of the other three to ease her fears, and in the end, Ronna comes to realize that she’ll be happy going anywhere her family is because they are her home. for Grades TK-3rd grade

Character Descriptions:

RONNA LLAMA- Lovable, but terrified of moving away from home. Scared of change and trying new things. She has a big heart. Vocal Range  Bb3 – E5

MAMA LLAMA- Mother of Ronna and Nico. Warm but honest. She’s from the South so perhaps she speaks with a southern accent. Vocal Range  Bb3 – D5

NICO LLAMA- Ronna’s brother. Fearless. The opposite personality of Ronna. Perhaps he speaks with a Latino accent. Vocal Range Bb2 – E4

HOPPY KANGAROO- Very outgoing with a forceful personality. He’s known to bellow out things. Perhaps he speaks with an Australian accent. Vocal Range  Bb2 – D4

Ready Player Three

Synopsis:

Former best friends, intelligent Alex, take-charge Lance, and Princess Harper have become best enemies trying to win (or just survive) the 8th-grade social “game”. But when they find themselves pulled into a ‘90’s educational video game, transformed into avatars that are their diametric opposites, they must find a way to literally survive and win by working together and discovering their true selves before it’s “game over” for good. The Breakfast Club meets Jumanji, Ready Player Three is a fun, half hour musical ideally suited for grades 4-8.

Character Descriptions:

ALEX – Female, 18+ to play early teens. Very smart. Vocal Range G3-E5

HARPER – Female, 18+ to play early teens. A pretty, popular princess.Vocal Range G3-F5

LANCE – Male, 18+ to play early teens. Jock. Vocal Range B2-G5

MAN 1 – Male, 18+ to play early teens – thirties. Plays everyone else including: Bully, Teacher,Narrator, Damsel, Bard, Fairy, Guard, Child, Villager, Troll, Village Lad, and Student. Vocal Range D3-A4

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Musical Theatre West auditions held?

All auditions take place at the MTW rehearsal halls and offices, located at 4350 East 7th St, Long Beach, CA 90804. You can enter through one of two gates on 7th Street. 

Where should I park?

Parking is available directly in front of the offices in our parking lot. If the lot is full, there is street parking available on Ximeno, as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods.

When should I arrive?

If you have an audition appointment or are attending a chorus call, arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for plenty of time to check-in. If you are attempting to audition without an appointment, our offices will be open an hour before our posted audition start time.

What should I wear?

For a vocal call, wear a comfortable outfit that you would wear to a job interview. If you would like to dress in the style of the show, feel free to do so.

For a dance call, wear form fitting clothing that you are comfortable dancing in and bring any shoes that could potentially be used in the show you are auditioning for. This could include jazz shoes, character shoes, or tap shoes, depending on the show. If you identify as female, character heels are usually required. 

What do I do when I get to the audition?

After you park, walk to our green room and check in with the audition monitors. If the audition is listed as an Equity Principal Audition (EPA) or an Equity Chorus Call (ECC), there will be an Equity monitor on site and all auditioners, regardless of union status, will need to check in with this monitor first. The MTW monitors will then have paperwork and additional check-in information for all auditioners. If you are a member of Actors’ Equity, remember to bring your Equity card.

How does the check-in process work?

There will be a Google Form for each auditioner to fill out when they arrive. This form will ask about basic contact information, union status, and any conflicts you may have with the rehearsal schedule provided. Bring a smartphone to fill out this form, plus your calendar to note any potential conflicts. The form may ask you to sign into your Google account, so have any login information ready. There is also a spot on the form that asks if you would accept an understudy role or an ensemble role, and we ask that you answer as truthfully as possible so we can cast the show appropriately.

What should I prepare?

For a vocal call, we typically ask auditioners to prepare a 16-32 bar cut of a song in the style of the show. This may change based on the individual shows, so always check the section of the audition notice called “Audition Material” for the most accurate information. Bring sheet music in the proper key; we do not allow tracks. 

For a dance call, arrive warmed up and in the proper attire. 

For all auditions, bring a physical headshot and resume..

What do I do after I check in?

Once you’ve confirmed with the audition monitors that your check-in form has successfully gone through, you can relax in our green room or right outside the green room. Don’t go too far away, because our audition monitors will call your name when it’s time for you to audition. 

For a vocal call, we will call you into the hallway as a part of a small group where you will wait to go into the audition room. One of our monitors will then take your group in one by one, and you will then have the chance to audition.

For a dance call, we will bring in groups of up to 50 at a time into the audition room at once.

How does the audition work once I am in the audition room?

For a vocal call, you will walk to the accompanist and go over your sheet music with them. Then, you can walk to the X marked on the floor in front of the audition panel and slate for the panel. Slating is where you say your name, the name of the song you will sing, and the name of the musical it is from or the name of the artist who sang it. You can then sing your song. Once you have finished, the panel will either thank you and you can leave, or they may ask you to sing another song. If you are asked to sing something else, you can return to the accompanist and go over the sheet music for the next song, and then return to the X to sing. Once you are finished, take a seat in the hallway outside the room once again and the audition monitor will have more information for you there.

For a dance call, the choreographer will teach the routine, then break the group into groups to practice. We will then organize you into smaller groups and you will perform the routine for adjudication.

How do callbacks work?

If the casting team needs to see more from you, then we will ask you to come back either later in the day or on another day, depending on what the team needs to see. The audition monitors will let you know before we dismiss you for the day and will let you know when to come back and what to prepare. All current callback material can be found here.

How will I know if I’m cast in the show?

All auditioners will receive an email stating whether or not they were cast in the show. We try to get this email out as soon as we can, but sometimes it can take up several weeks to fully cast the show. This MTW audition page will also be updated when all offers have been sent out.

It’s my first time auditioning, any advice?

Yes!  Always be yourself when auditioning. You never know what the casting team is looking for, so the more you can let yourself shine through in your audition, the better. When you do your best, you make our job easier because we want to find the right people for each role. Make sure you arrive on time and come prepared for anything the team may throw your way. Try not to compare yourself to others and most importantly, have fun! And if you have an off day, there are always more auditions around the corner. We’re excited to have you!
