Disney’s Newsies

July 12 - July 28, 2024

Based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, Newsies tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. This Tony Award-winning Disney musical is a thrilling tale of courage, friendship, and standing up for what’s right. With unforgettable songs and show-stopping dance numbers, Newsies will have you cheering for the underdogs and will inspire you to “Seize the Day.” -- Newsies is rated PG with a run time of two hours and 25 minutes.--

Headlines, history and hope take centerstage in Musical Theatre West’s production of ‘Disney’s Newsies’

Spectrum News was at Musical Theatre West’s rehearsals and captured behind-the-scenes and talked with the stars of MTW’s production of Disney’s Newsies.

“With its dynamic choreography, powerful performances, and compelling storytelling, this production is a must-see for theatre and Disney enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
From the moment the curtain rises, the energy is palpable. The set design, reminiscent of the bustling streets of 1899 New York City, immediately transports the audience to the world of the newsboys. The intricate, multi-level set pieces allow for fluid movement and create a vivid backdrop for the story’s unfolding drama.”

“With Dillon Klena reprising his signature role to sensational effect and director-choreographer Jeffry Denman giving the production a fresh new look and feel, Musical Theatre West treats audiences to one of the best Newsies ever.”

“With its spring-loaded backflips, airborne spins, rambunctious kicks and balletic pivots, the athletic ensemble in Disney’s “Newsies, the Broadway Musical,” the Tony-winning screen-to-stage Musical Theatre West sensation that is currently rampaging at Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach through July 28th, puts up a persuasive struggle against corporate greed. But the irrepressible physicality of that scrappy band of ragamuffins with their ink-stained fingers and Gotham City accents are just part of what turns this brilliant stage transformation of Disney’s 1992 big-screen misfire into a spectacular crowd pleaser.”
