MTW holds special weekday performances to introduce children to live musical theatre. This program is offered at little or no cost to schools. We believe that exposure to live theatre is a crucial element for a well-rounded education. To date, over 200,000 area students have participated in this program. Following our recent student matinee of Guys and Dolls, an area student exclaimed to his teacher. “That was better than our class trip to Disneyland!”
Each year thousands of children are exposed to the joy and magic of musical theater through our Education and Outreach Programs.
For each age-appropriate Mainstage show Musical Theatre West will present one or two special 10:00 AM performances. For only $5 per student (many of whom have that cost subsidized by MTW) classes are treated to a professional Broadway-style musical at the Carpenter Center. In many cases MTW is also able to underwrite the cost of transportation.
Every participating student and teacher receives specially designed study guides which cater to the daytime performances and adhere to the California Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Content Standards.
These special performances always sell out very quickly. In order for classes to attend, teachers need to fill out the online registration form linked to the right of this page.

In School Workshops
Prior to each student matinee performance; MTW actors and educational staff visit participating schools for an invigorating workshop engaging students and teachers alike. During this workshop students learn about the production that they will see at the matinee performanceand other elements of live theatre.
